Coach and Philosophy

Future Stars Youth Triathlon is led by Ross Hartley. Born and raised in Pickerington, Ohio, Coach Ross has the opportunity to serve the community that he grew up in. As a Robotics teacher at Pickerington Ridgeview STEM Junior High and cross country and track coach at Pickerington North High School, Ross has been able to help lead students and athletes who are in the same shoes he was once in. Coach Ross has also been involved with youth sports in several different capacities including youth swimming (New Albany Aquatics Club) and running coach (Columbus Running Company Grasshoppers).

Ross has had success as a triathlete, finishing 3rd (1st American) and earning a Bronze Medal at the 2014 Triathlon World Championships (Sprint Distance). He has also finished top 3 in his age group 5 different years at USA Triathlon National Championships, as well as top 10 overall at 7 different USA Triathlon National Championships. Since 2007, Ross has won over 50 local and regional triathlons, qualified for Team USA for all 3 triathlon distances (Sprint, Standard, and Long Course), and been a 10x USA Triathlon All-American. In addition, he earned the title of All-World Ironman Athlete. He was selected for and participated in the USA Triathlon College Recruitment Program Camp at the National Training Center. Most recently Ross was the Age Group National Champion at the 2018 Duathlon National Championships- Sprint Distance.  Coach Ross brings an elite athlete’s perspective to Future Stars, along with his experience as a teacher and coach.

World Champs Finish

Coach Ross was 1 of 44 people across the country selected as a USA Triathlon Ambassador. The goal of this program is to expose communities to the sport of triathlon by engaging current and former Team USA members to share their inspiring stories about their time in the sport. Ambassadors will identify steps they took to experience dramatically positive, life changing effects and how participants can do the same through simple changes in their daily life. In this role, ambassadors will serve as motivators and advocates of the triathlete lifestyle. Check out his bio here

Coach Ross is both a Certified USA Triathlon Level 1 Coach and in the process of obtaining USA Triathlon Youth and Junior Certification.

Ross has given a TEDx talk focusing on a simple equation that rules our daily lives, Event + Response = Outcome (E+R=O).  Examining the Response piece of this equation through the lens as an educator, coach, and athlete Ross discusses how important one’s mindset is in determining their success and happiness.



Philosophy and Coaching Beliefs:

Our coaching philosophy is centered on the idea that all athletes have the capability to achieve personal greatness with the proper guidance and desire. We believe that the process of learning how to master the physical and mental skills required to compete are not only more important to the athlete in the long term than winning, but are actually a prerequisite to success. Through an appreciation of this process, athletes can learn to value failure as much as success, which allows them the freedom to give their very best as they work toward their ultimate goals.   As coaches, we strive to create an environment of mutual respect that allows for the self‐improvement of athletes. Our common purpose is growth through the sport of triathlon and the road to success requires that athletes develop a passion for hard work. We seek to foster that passion by creating a challenging and fun environment that offers the camaraderie of teammates, and the guidance and support of coaches that will ultimately benefit all the athletes regardless where their path in life takes them.

Our first priorities are providing a safe, fun environment. Beyond that, we want to develop healthy athletic habits so that our athletes’ desire for and ability in the sport of triathlon continue to grow.  By not only coaching the athletes on the “What” of a workout, but also the “Why” we will instill important concepts such as:

  • Healthy eating habits
  • Proper fueling pre, post and during workouts
  • Proper hydration
  • Utilizing dynamic stretching movements to warm the body up
  • Cross training to minimize overuse injuries
  • The need for rest and recovery
  • Setting appropriate athletic goals

Coaching Beliefs:

– A Coach’s Job:

A coach’s job is to design and then provide the environment and support for each individual to achieve personal success. The environment, support and definition of success look different for each person. 

Minimum Effective Dose:

What is the least amount of training that we can do to get maximum performance? On a never ending quest to find this fine line which is unique for each athlete.

Begin with the end in mind and work backwards from there.

What vision/version of you do you want for the future? What is your desired Outcome? Clarity is key. More clarity you have with this, the easier it is to blueprint. This is the bedrock on which your future is built.

The training plan should fit your life and lifestyle, not the other way around.

Training/Racing should always be Rewarding. Running repeat 800s is not always fun, but it should be rewarding (appreciating and growing from the “suck”).

Mundanity of Excellence:

“Excellence is mundane. Excellence is accomplished through the doing of actions, ordinary in themselves, performed consistently and carefully, habitualized, compounded together, added up over time.”
